Following the recent arrival of the LPG carrier Shivalik, another vessel, Nanda Devi, has successfully reached India after passing through the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing regional tensions. The Nanda Devi docked at Vadinar port in Jamnagar, Gujarat, on Tuesday, just a day after Shivalik’s arrival. The ship is carrying approximately 46,500 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and is scheduled to begin a ship-to-ship (STS) transfer operation at the port. The cargo will be transferred to MT BW Birch for further distribution.
This marks the second successful arrival of an LPG tanker in India after navigating the conflict-affected Strait of Hormuz — a strategically important but sensitive route linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and playing a key role in global energy trade. Authorities stated that the operation was made possible through coordinated efforts involving the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Shipping Corporation of India, and support from both the Indian Navy and the Iranian Navy to ensure safe transit through the high-risk zone. Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh visited the vessel after it docked and interacted with the ship’s captain and crew while preparations for cargo handling were underway.
A senior official onboard highlighted the importance of the shipment, noting that the cargo would help ease supply pressures in India at a time when global LPG availability is strained due to geopolitical uncertainties. Earlier, the LPG carrier Shivalik reached Mundra Port on Monday with a cargo of around 40,000 metric tonnes. About half of this is being discharged at Mundra, while the remaining quantity is expected to be transported to Mangalore.
In a related development, another tanker, Jag Laadki, carrying nearly 81,000 tones of Murban crude oil from the UAE, is currently on its way to India. Officials have also confirmed that Indian crew members operating in the Persian Gulf region remain safe, with no reported incidents so far.
